A collective media experience of Shoals and beyond…

So far, my experiences as a working intern here at Shoals have been exciting and diverse. Yesterday I cleared the trail to the infamous Shoe Tree. I hadn’t been there before so it was fun and suspenseful to work my way there with the weedwacker. Before my Shoals adventure, I had never used a weedwacker before. Actually, it has been a week of many firsts. I now know how to use a power washer, drive the all-terrain vehicles, get to know the gulls (like Lucy, the overprotective mother, who just happens to inhabit the path in front of my dorm), and bake an enormous batch of ginger snap cookies. My trip to the island alone was an experience–the wind picked up and the waves were high and the boat cleared the water several times. This was the farthest offshore I have been in a boat. I got drenched, but it was exhilarating! Each day I learn something new, whether it is a new skill or new information. It’s great to be a part of this community and to help the island campus run smoothly. There are always many opportunities for fun as well, and the sunsets never disappoint.

Gulls seem to like internet access just as much as we do.

It has been interesting waking up to the sound of gulls. I have mowed, done dinner clean up, made embryo jars, and helped with the trash run so far. There is always a great many things to do here. I love the free time that I have spend in the hammock, reading and watching movies. I would recommend this experience to anyone. It is really going to be the experience of a lifetime.
